Q&A ~ Internship and Entry Level Jobs in Homeland Security

Q&A with Bill Golden
CEO, IntelligenceCareers.com

Question:

I am seeking an entry-level job or internship in the government/private sector related to counterterrorism or emergency management.

Ideally this would be an opportunity that will have me examine policy and procedures within these disciplines to make recommendations in improving government defense systems or the emergency management process.

I would be interested in, but not limited to, working in the following roles: Policy Analyst, Intelligence Analyst, Emergency Management Planner/Coordinator, or Program Analyst.

My recent degree is a Bachelors degree in Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness. As part of the degree, I conducted an in-depth analysis of intelligence issues in the War on Terror in a paper that comes with high acclaim from retired professionals of the intelligence community. The paper analyzes the rise of religious extremism and terrorist regimes, the challenges that the global terror network presents for global security, and it also suggests alternative methods in combating terrorism.

Getting a degree seems to have been the easy part. How do I find opportunities for my new skills?

=========

Answer:

Here is a good starting point for internships and other opportunities with DHS itself: http://www.dhs.gov/xabout/careers/content_multi_image_0011.shtm

There are also other internships sponsored by DHS that you may find of interest: https://internships.llnl.gov/dhs/

Closely related to DHS are opportunities with ICE: http://www.ice.gov/careers/internships/

And much like ICE, FEMA is another side of DHS: http://www.fema.gov/about/career/internship/

As for jobs, I recommend that you put Google to work to help you find ‘junior homeland security position’; have already built the search for you: Search Google

I strongly recommend that you take this Google search and turn it into an alert which will deliver new related news to your email box each day.

Best regards and am always here if you have a question.
